Description

The Hamlet of Preston while being an integral part of Paignton does have its own unique heritage and character. Historically it’s development has been closely aligned to the church. In 1050 AD as part of the Manor of Paignton it passed into the ownership of the See of Exeter remaining under the control of the Diocese of Exeter until the time of the reformation. It then passed through the hands of succeeding Lords of the manor until 1922 when it Passed to Paignton Urban Council.

Once surrounded by farmland and orchards it has many old buildings and structures including the Old Manor Inn in Old Torquay Road which dates from the 17th Century and the portico-entrance to the former Oak Tree Farm which passed through the Langdon family for generations. Other buildings of note include Brooke cottage, the Spiritualist Church founded between 1912 – 1922.

Sadly , but inevitably some historic buildings have over time been demolished in the name of progress. Preston House the home of the Butland family from 1912 for one example among many was demolished to make way for a car park and gardens in the 1950’s but Preston still has much to discover and enjoy.
