Paignton Medieval

Only rich patrons such as the Church, the Lord of the Manor or wealthy merchants could afford the medieval structures which bless Paignton. Kirkham House was most likely built by the first of these and although modified many times over the years still presents a substantial presence.

Administered by the local Sheriff on behalf of the Lord of the Manor the Clink, Paigntons medievil lock-up, provided temporary accommodation for those committing minor misdemeanours.

The Bishops Tower provided protection for the land and treasures of the Church from attack by Norse and Danish raiders.

The local Church can trace its origins to a building begun in the 1200s and has been restored and extended by gifts and subscription many times.
